Bachelor Degree: What is a Bachelor Degree?

A bachelor degree is the most traditional degree given by US colleges and universities. It normally requires at least four years but not more than five years of full-time college-level coursework. The two most common classes of bachelor degrees awarded by US schools are the bachelor of science degree (also called the B.S.) and the bachelor of arts degree (also called the B.A.). Some schools offer only the B.A. degree, even for science majors (such as a B.A. in biology). Other schools offer both the B.A. and the B.S.


A bachelors degree is what most students pursue when enrolling in a US university or college. In fact, people with a bachelors degree earn substantially more than those who don't. More and more jobs and careers today require applicants to posses one. Some would argue that a bachelors degree is the first step to success. At the very least, it helps open doors of opportunity.

All students pursuing a bachelors degree must select a major, usually by the end of their second year. Students must complete a required number of courses (or units) within their major in order to graduate with a bachelor degree in that major. They may also be required to complete a number of courses in closely related fields in order to satisfy other requirements. For example, a student who is majoring in chemistry will not only have to complete chemistry courses, but also mathematics, biology, and physics courses in order to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Ferris Awards Margaret Riecker Honorary Doctoral Degree

Margaret Ann Riecker of Midland will be the recipient of an honorary doctoral degree for public service from Ferris State University during commencement ceremonies at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 9, for the university’s Michigan College of Optometry, and College of Education and Human Services.

For more than 40 years, she has been a trustee of both the Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation (established by her parents) and the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. She became the Dow Foundation’s president in 2000, and also is currently chair of the Towsley Foundation. She has worked toward improving the work of Michigan foundations, especially family foundations, through the Council of Michigan Foundations, and nationwide through the Council on Foundations.

Riecker’s support of education has been invaluable. From 1990-97 she co-chaired the steering committee of the $1 billion Campaign for Michigan. She and her husband, John, co-chaired The Michigan Difference, a $2.5 billion campaign. She serves on the Leadership Council of the Center for the Education of Women, and also on the board of trustees of her alma mater, Carleton College, having been chair from 1999-2004. She is a past chair and trustee of Central Michigan University’s Board of Trustees and serves as a member of the board on the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

In addition to her B.A. degree from Carleton College in Minnesota, she has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from Central Michigan University, Albion College and the University of Michigan.

Her current local community volunteer activities include serving on the boards of Midland Downtown Development Authority; Greater Midland Community Centers, Inc.; chair of the Planning Committee for MidMichigan Medical Center; MidMichigan Health System; Midland Kids First; Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network; Midland Future Committee; Michigan Molecular Institute; Northcoast Technology Investors Advisory Committee; Saginaw Valley State University; Steering Committee Promise for Tomorrow Campaign; and the Joint Midland City/County Building Authority.

She and her late husband, John Riecker, have two children, Margaret (Thompson) and John Towsley.

The one year course will earn you a master’s degree at the cost of 4,400 pounds (6,239 dollars). “During the course we will consider what people can do on Facebook and Twitter, and how they can be used for communication and marketing purposes,” says the course convener Jon Hickman, adding that “There has been significant interest in the course already, and it will definitely appeal to students looking to go into professions including journalism and PR.”

Of course, there’s the question of how deep such a course should go; some students have already described the course as too basic. Finding expert teachers on the subject might be a problem, since many students are already very good at using social networking and social media sites. However, there’s nothing wrong with the idea; there are courses in TV and media, and social media and social networking are definitely worthy subjects, especially if you’re studying communications, journalism, PR or marketing.
